Norman Mailer, the combative, controversial and often outspoken novelist with striking blue eyes ,who loomed over American letters longer and larger than any other writer of his generation, died early yesterday in Manhattan. He was 84.
He had an ability to outrage and inform in equal measure on almost any subject. 'He had such a compendious vision of what it meant to be alive,'
said his friend William Kennedy, author of Ironweed. 'He had serious opinions on everything there was to have an opinion on, and everything he said was so original.'
Reading his Superman comes to the Market is quite actualhttp://web.archive.org/web/20030910061551/www.esquire.com/features/articles/2003/031001_mfe_mailer_1.html

He claimed that "Superman" was what gave JFK the win over Nixon. I'm skeptical, but I loved Mailer.
