Beckmann ne se fait pas plus d'illusions. En 1918, les lithos de L'Enfer content un voyage à travers une ville démoniaque où ceux qui ne périssent pas fusillés ou étranglés meurent de faim. Ruptures de perspective, gros plans et disproportions créent la sensation d'une vie disloquée et absurde. Un de ces Beckmann serait un don précieux pour Mme Dix, mais les artistes se tiennent à distance l'un de l'autre pour une raison simple : tous deux peuvent prétendre au premier rang dans leur génération.
Nothing meant more to Max Beckmann than his own originality, as a human being, and as an artist. He was a deeply spiritual man, with his own ideas, and we end with this quote, the one we started with, for it sums up this man entirely: "The greatest mystery of all is reality."
