For Aborigines, food is closely associated with spirituality.
They believe that everything living, including humans, was created by great spiritual beings. A key part of their spirituality is Dreaming, a belief that the great spirits live on in nature and through rituals.
They believe that the spirits do not want them to eat certain foods. Customs of hunting, gathering, preparation, and cooking evolved through their religious beliefs. Each person feels a connection between himself or herself and a particular plant or animal. This special plant or animal is known as the person's totem. Many people do not kill or eat their totems, except during special special ceremonies.

Excerpts from DREAMINGS : The Art OF ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIA- Editor Peter Sutton
I feel with my body. Feeling all these trees, all this country. When this blow you can feel it. Same for country... you feel it, you can look, but feeling... that make you.- Big Bill Neidjie, Gagudju Elder,Kakadu
Indigenous people have occupied Australia for at least 60 000 years and have evolved with the land - changing it and changing with it. The land was not just soil or rocks or minerals, but a whole environment that sustains and is sustained by people and culture. For Indigenous Australians the land is the core of all spirituality and this relationship has been deeply misunderstood over the past 200 years or so. This relationship is central to all issues that are important to Indigenous people today.
When European colonizers first arrived in Australia they encountered an unfamiliar land occupied by people they didn't understand.
Because they didn't understand the peoples' society and their land 'ownership' system, Australia was deemed to be 'terra nullius' and the land was claimed by the British.
But Indigenous people fought, and are still fighting, for their land and their lives.
The history of these battles is not often told but they involved hundreds of incidents and thousands of people. These stories form a part of the untold history of Australia.
t is my father's land, my grandfather's land, my grandmother's land. I am related to it, it give me my identity. If I don't fight for it, then I will be moved out of it and [it] will be the loss of my identity.Father Dave Passi, Plaintiff, 'Mabo' Case in 'Land bilong Islander' 1990
These struggles too were often resolved through violence as Indigenous people were progressively dispossessed of their land. The struggle for land rights continues today through the legal and political systems. Some important legal milestones have been reached which show that arrangements based on cultural sensitivity and respect can be successful for all Australians.
On 3 June 1992 the High Court of Australia handed down its decision in Mabo vs The State of Queensland, ruling that the treatment of Indigenous property rights based on the principle of terra nullius was wrong and racist.Island people have their own portions of land which are handed down through generations and with my dad's claim, he was denied access to his land through the government and he said "Why? We all have our right to our own lands. I can show you where my boundaries are".
In the beginning was…the map.
"There has probably always been a mapping impulse in human consciousness," geographer J.B. Harley once wrote, "and the mapping experience, involving cognitive mapping of space, undoubtedly existed long before the physical artifacts we now call maps".
ABORIGINES- The word comes from the Latin words—ab and origine—which means "from the beginning."
Before the arrival of Europeans in the late 1700s, the Aborigines were successful hunters and gatherers. They lived off the land by understanding plants, animals, and natural resources. Aborigines continue to feel that they have a special relationship with the land.

drawing by margueritaAccording to members of the American Psychological Association, New Yorkers are probably more stressed out than most (another shocker). They found that, in general, Americans living on the right and left coasts are worse off than others. Face it, said Dr. Russ Newman, a point man on this issue for the psychological association: In this regard, New York is “maybe even a worst-case scenario.”
But according to Clyde Haberman, “New Yorkers also come up with clever ways to relieve their stress.”http://news.blogs.nytimes.com
How do you relieve stress?

Gout is actually caused by a build up of uric acid crystals in the joint fluid. The immune system reacts to these crystals as if to a foreign invader to the body. The joint, as a result, becomes inflamed and painful.Just like arthritis pain, finding alternative treatments for gout pain is important. Gout sufferers are usually prescribed one of three types of drugs that all have negative side affects. Finding a combination of natural ways to help gout pain will be beneficial for long term health.
Some other causes:
Stress raises uric acid levels
Kidney failure may make it more difficult to rid the body of uric acid, thereby triggering gout.
Lemon juice prevents gout attacks by stimulating the formation of calcium carbonate in the body. Calcium carbonate neutralizes acids in the body, including uric acid that triggers gout attacks. After each meal drink the juice of one freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of lukewarm water. To get more juice out of the lemon, bring it to room temperature, then roll it around on the counter with the palm of your hand.
Eat foods high in potassium
Eating generous amounts of other fruits and vegetables helps keep uric acid crystals in solution.
Having sex prevents from getting gout. It seems that increased sexual activity reduces uric acid levels.Keep the leg elevated.
Press just below the center of the nose toward the upper lip.
Press and massage between the ball of the foot and the bottom of the big toe on each foot; then on the left foot only, stimulate a point halfway between the base of the little toe and the heel pad. Press inward and upward on the underside of the protuberance at the base of the skull.
On both hands, press and massage a point on the inside of the pad at the base of the thumb directly beneath the index finger; then on the left palm only, stimulate a point halfway between the base of the little finger and the wrist.
Blueberries are high in anti-inflammatory compounds called anthocyanins, which help ease the pain of gout.
Cherries If you are lucky enough to have fresh cherries, eating 6-8 cherries daily will relieve the symptoms of gout. This remedy was reported in 1950 by Dr. Ludwig W. Blau who cured his own gout. Frozen and canned cherries may also be used. When you feel an attack coming on, eat 20-30 cherries immediately. Cherries are rich in compounds that prevent the destruction of collagen, which the body uses to form connective tissue. The connective tissue is damaged by gout. Cherries also have an enzyme that neutralizes uric acid and are high in anthocyanins which have high antioxidant properties as well as anti-inflammatory action. For greatest effectiveness eat them between meals.
Devil's claw reduces uric acid levels and is a natural cleansing agent for toxic impurities. Take 400 mg of the dried extract 3x a day for as long as desired.
DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) is very effective in relieving pain and swelling caused by inflammation. It helps dissolve crystalline deposits.
Garlic Eat several cloves of raw garlic daily. Mince the garlic and add it to black cherry juice for a potent remedy.
Ginger Put 1/3 cup of ground ginger (buy in bulk to keep the cost down) in a bathtub of water and soak for 30 minutes. This will cause you to sweat (a good thing) which will help eliminate the uric acid from your tissues. When you are finished the bath be sure to rinse off thoroughly, as the ginger can cause skin irritation if it dries on your skin.Grapes are high in alkalines
Buchu tea helps dissolve and flush out uric acid crystals.Saffron neutralizes uric acid buildup.

Absurdity is the condition or state in which human beings exist in a meaningless, irrational universe wherein people's lives have no purpose or meaning.
An alternative reaction against drawing-room naturalism came from the Theatre of the Absurd. Whereas traditional theatre attempts to create a photographic representation of life as we see it, the Theatre of the Absurd aims to create a ritual-like, mythological, archetypal, allegorical vision, closely related to the world of dreams. The focal point of these dreams is often man's fundamental bewilderment and confusion, stemming from the fact that he has no answers to the basic existential questions: why we are alive, why we have to die, why there is injustice and suffering.
Dostoevsky wrote various instances of wordplay, or double meanings, into Crime and Punishment.
In the original Russian text, the names of the major characters in Crime and Punishment have something of a double meaning.
However, these are not seen when translated to different languages.
Name Word Meaning (in Russian)
Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov raskol a schism, or split
Pyotr Petrovich Luzhin luzha a puddle
Dmitri Prokofych Razumikhin razum reason, intelligence Alexander Grigorievich Zamyotov zametit to notice, to realize
Marmeladov marmalade jam
Arkady Ivanovich Svidrigailov Svidrigailo a Lithuanian Prince
One of the triumphs of world literature, The Brothers Karamazov is a summation of Dostoyevsky's beliefs and concerns and develops his greatest themes: rationalism versus irrationalism; the struggle between love and hatred, faith and unfaith; the dangers represented by socialism and the attempt to engineer human happiness; the power of sensuality; the reality and unreality of God; and the conflict between
and the conflict between generations.
The central drama of the novel is the struggle between the repulsive father, Fyodor Karamazov, and his four sons.
Each of the sons represents a universal trait of humanity:
Alyosha, saintliness; Dmitri, passion and sensuality; Ivan, the intellect; and Smerdyakov, ugliness of body, mind, and spirit. Dostoyevsky explores the right of a child to raise his hand against his father and, by extension, the right of man to raise his hand against God. The novel seems to encompass the breadth of the human condition and its capabilities;
here, the art and vision of Dostoyevsky reached their peak.

The poems about the deeply human have a very suggestive message:
the chilling feeling and indifference toward others' suffering.
Her poem "Still" is especially expressive in this context, where she creates in the very first lines an almost anguished expressionistic situation: a train is on its way somewhere but no one steps off because the freight cars are hermetically sealed and the passengers – symbolically represented by Jewish names – can not determine the direction of the trip.http://www.lemonde.fr/web/article/0,1-0@2-3232,36-971893,0.html
Albert Camus preferred to be known as a man and a thinker, rather than as a member of a school or ideology. He preferred persons over ideas. In an interview in 1945, Camus rejected any ideological associations: “No, I am not an existentialist."
Although he is often associated with existentialism, Camus refused this label: as he wrote in his essay The Rebel, his whole life was devoted against the philosophy of nihilism.(from Wikipedia)
His austere search for moral order found its aesthetic correlative in the classicism of his art.
He was a stylist of great purity and intense concentration and rationality.
The news is no more from Burma. The young monks are quiet in their cells, or they are dead. But words have escaped: the defiant, beautiful poetry of Aung Than and Zeya Aung; and we know of the unbroken will of the journalist U Win Tin, who makes ink out of brick powder on the walls of his prison cell and writes with a pen made from a bamboo mat - at the age of 77. These are the bravest of the brave. What shame they bring to those in the west whose hypocrisy and silence helps to feed the monster that rules Burma.http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,2200309,00.html
Rendering an explicit sense of the miseries of the past few decades and the peril of the present could be found, there are few of us who could bear to read his book. No doubt the times are best approached by indirection, by symbol, myth, and legend. And this circuitous approach to the contemporary world nowhere appears to better advantage than in The Roots of Heaven"

A cigar is a tightly rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco, one end of which is ignited so that its smoke may be drawn into the smoker's mouth through the other end.
Most cigar smokers do not inhale the smoke.
The English cigar comes from the Spanish cigarro, which in turn derives from the Mayan word for tobacco, siyar; see the entry for cigarro at the Spanish Royal Academy's online dictionary.
Cigar tobacco is grown in significant quantities in Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Philippines, and the United States, Havana cigars from Cuba being particularly famous.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigar

TOGETHER - a word that apparently got lost in the wind or in translation. It is an ingredient that must be used between two people ,a man and a woman, parents and children, neighbors, nations, countries.
The only problem is how that together is used.
Not to attack, not to destroy, not to step over one another.
TOGETHER we can all find peace and harmony if we all together, are sincere and honest about being so.
No empty words,no games.
I just come across an article in The Atlantic,by Arnold Schwarzenegger: Coming to America.http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/prem/200711/schwarzenegger-america
As much as I do admit to have reservations about him, given his background, for years I watch from far his conduct and some of his
vision about going through life,I bypass my feelings to showcase his latest comments on the general malaise that exists around our world and the hope of few to see materialize a more fraternal and sense of communal collaboration.
After all,the belicose status quo can only lead us to more devastation, lack of creativity, miasma, and a total loss of joie de vivre.
“The important thing is never to stop questioning.”
When we live in Fear, surrounded by Greed and Indifference, there is no Love,no Tenderness,no Togetherness.
And paraphrasing Arnold:"To remain great, we must transform our politics. Self-improvement is ingrained in the American spirit, so I believe we will succeed. But we cannot afford to waste any more time."
The speech—and the concept—made headlines around the world. Such are our political divisions today that when someone simply talks about working together, it’s newsworthy.

Here is Monsieur Robert Sutton
« Winning Assholes: “Making Money Gives a Pass to Even the Worst Manners” | Main | Assholes Across Cultures »
Objectif Zéro-sale-con: A New Blog for French Edition of The No Asshole Rule
I wrote a post a few weeks back about the forthcoming French edition, which will published by Vuibert in April and is called Objectif Zéro-sale-con. I love the explanation from my publisher about the process through which they developed the title. As I said, Geoff Staines explained:
The literal translation of asshole is "trou du cul", a form of endearment generously employed throughout the French-speaking world, but during an impromptu Vuibert seminar on the subject its meaning was felt to be halfway between sneak and jerk, besides which it is not used in relation to women. The very commonly used "con", in many ways the natural choice, usually means plain stupid and lacks the disruptive/destructive/mean-minded nuance. The more selective expression "sale con", however, does it all because the qualifier "sale" (dirty) emphasises the intentional nature of the con-ness. And as for "zéro" instead of "règle" (rule) or "facteur" (which means factor but also postman), we went for it because it harks back, amongst other things, to "zéro défaut" (from the quality circles' elimination of faults).
Vuibert has also just launched a blog about Objectif Zéro-sale-con. It looks fantastic. For starters, it has a translation of my post about why I call them assholes, the self-test now known as the ARSE Test, and an excerpt, with more to come. As those of you who have read my posts about the reaction to Der Arscholch-Faktor in Germany know, I've been quite interested to learn what it takes to be known as workplace jerk in different cultures, and the different ways that they are handled in different cultures. I hope that those of you from France (and from other French-speaking regions, such as Quebec in Canada) will enlighten us in French on both the new Objectif Zéro-sale-con blog, as well as on this blog in English.
Meanwhile, I will turn to one of my favorite Stanford students, Tsedal Beyene to help me translate what written in French about the book -- Tsedal went to French schools when she was growing up and speaks it fluently, along with another four or five languages.

Opposition party wins Poland election
By DAVID McHUGH Associated Press Writer
© 2007 The Associated PressWARSAW, Poland — A pro-business opposition party that wants Poland's troops out of Iraq ousted Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski's government in parliamentary elections Sunday, as Poles opted for leadership offering a more cooperative approach to the European Union.
In Garwolin’s town square, an older man responded to questions about the election by raising
fist and shouting, “Ducks,” a local nickname for the twins.
“I prefer my ducks boiled in a pot,” said a friend sitting beside him.

Hitler in the Box by marguerita
